Microdermabrasion - (Lunchtime Peel)
Description
Microdermabrasion is a skin-freshening technique designed to help repair sun-damaged and aging skin. Through gentle abrasion and suctioning, this treatment is effective in reducing unwanted conditions, such as fine lines, stretch marks, “crow’s feet,” age spots, and acne scars. Microdermabrasion will also stimulate the production of skin cells and collagen.
Duration
30 Minutes to 1 Hour
Side Effects
Little to no discomfort. Skin may feel dry and tight for the first 24 hours after treatment, and appear pink or red for the first few days. Possibility of irritation should crystals get into the eyes.
Recovery
No downtime; normal activities can be resumed immediately. (Avoid sun exposure for the first few days. Use moisturizers and sunscreens.)
Risks
Potential risks of bleeding, infection, hyperpigmentation, and/or perforation.
Results
You may need to repeat the procedure to achieve desired results. (A typical regimen consists of 6 treatments at intervals of about 2 to 3 weeks.)
Technology
(You will need to prepare your skin for treatment. This includes refraining from using retinols, Retin A and any other active skin care products two to three days before and afterwards.) Microdermabrasion is similar to dermabrasion in that it removes the unhealthy layers of dead skin cells; however, it is considered a mini procedure that does not go as deep. A doctor performs this non-surgical “lunchtime peel” by sandblasting the skin with aluminum oxide crystals or a similar substance to remove the stratum corneum (top) layer of the skin. (Dermabrasion, on the other hand, uses a rough wire brush, or a burr containing diamond particles, attached to a motorized handle.)
